Ah William (Billy Jay), thanks so much for your patience- I know it’s been absolutely forever =x. And thank you for coming in last minute to do a shoot with us!
I saw the trailer for this just a few days ago (it looked good!) when I was at IFC to see what was a disappointing film (Certified Copy), so when I found out it was premiering today- I bought myself a ticket for the evening screening which included a Q&A with Director Robin Hessman.
It was so fascinating– kids raised under communism, the iron curtain falls and begin to piece together reality while at the same time coming of age. My Perestroika was engaging the whole way through, where documentaries usually feel clinical to me. This had humor, an intrinsically engaging subject matter, momentum, a very nicely laid out structure, and intimacy. You feel like you’re hearing from people you who are your friends (which while usually a goal, not so many directors accomplish very well). This isn’t a film about drama or disaster and victims, it’s about a mass cultural movement to enlightenment and being able to laugh at the world around you.
Synopsis from IFC:

This is the story of five ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times — from sheltered Soviet childhood, to the collapse of the USSR in their teenage years, to the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet Russia. Weaving interviews of the one-time classmates together with rare home movie footage from the ’70s and ’80s and official Soviet propaganda films, MY PERESTROIKA paints a complex picture of the dreams and disillusionment of those raised behind the Iron Curtain.

Though while it certainly warms me up to Russian culture, unfortunately the widespread xenophobia against Asians and people from the Caucuses will probably keep me from going there anytime in the near future.
Absolutely amazing to shoot– it always catches you a bit off guard when you realize there’s something special there and you keep clicking as if it will peel away the layers of mystery. Shooting Louis reminds me of when Roy Pratt first walked into my studio for a portrait session (a few years ago now!) and he had arrived in New York just a week and a half earlier, yet there was something absofuckinlutely special there. Look at Roy now, there’s the proof that others were seeing the same thing.
I sincerely wish the best success to Louis, and I hope the industry treats him well!
(A quick note: these New York Class of Fall 2011 photos for TheFashionisto.com have zero retouching. These are the boys.)
This past Saturday Carl & I set out to do our 2nd New York Fashion Week Casting Call. I *loved* many of the guys that came by and at times couldn’t stop clicking (as if clicking would dig away and uncover the mysterious allure to some, and I would have an answer).
This past Saturday, we hosted a day of faces, both new and established for a class photo of sorts. Donning a double breasted blazer from Diwon Man and a modest shirt from Hyden Yoo, the models each sat for a brief session with Steven Chu before making a dash to castings for the upcoming fashion week.
Over the course of fashion week, we’ll provide a closer look at this season’s class as each model reveals their secret for surviving an endless amount of castings.
