Protected Bike Lanes in NYC

So important. Bike lanes need to be protected, or new cyclists will not feel safe. As an everyday cycler, I hear this as the #1 concern from intermittent cyclists.
Plainly put: There’s inherent risk, and there’s unnecessary risk.

In America we def associate different cultural meanings/reasons/behaviors with driving than in other countries.. easy to spot when you see Hollywood movie car scenes. I have not been to Copenhagen, but I lived in Berlin. NYC has a specific energy of the city. LA is somewhere in between but also different.

I still believe in a protected bike lane that keeps bikes in, cars out. As a New Yorker, we’re going to have our own outcome and it’s still going to be messy, and we are always going to have a spillover problem. people in bike lanes, people in street. cars on the sidewalk, cars in bike lanes. bikes on sidewalks, bikes in car lanes. But NYC has a very well known congestion problem.

The pulse and speed of our city is what makes NYC special. We like to move fast in an irreverent way.. but if we can allow people to move fast and get there safely, then our government is serving its people well.

Absolutely amazing to shoot– it always catches you a bit off guard when you realize there’s something special there and you keep clicking as if it will peel away the layers of mystery. Shooting Louis reminds me of when Roy Pratt first walked into my studio for a portrait session (a few years ago now!) and he had arrived in New York just a week and a half earlier, yet there was something absofuckinlutely special there. Look at Roy now, there’s the proof that others were seeing the same thing.

I sincerely wish the best success to Louis, and I hope the industry treats him well!

This past Saturday Carl & I set out to do our 2nd New York Fashion Week Casting Call. I *loved* many of the guys that came by and at times couldn’t stop clicking (as if clicking would dig away and uncover the mysterious allure to some, and I would have an answer).

This past Saturday, we hosted a day of faces, both new and established for a class photo of sorts. Donning a double breasted blazer from Diwon Man and a modest shirt from Hyden Yoo, the models each sat for a brief session with Steven Chu before making a dash to castings for the upcoming fashion week.

Over the course of fashion week, we’ll provide a closer look at this season’s class as each model reveals their secret for surviving an endless amount of castings.
